How often should you wash your hair?
On average, people wash their hair twice a week. Yet our Keune hair experts indicate that the best washing routine is different for everyone. This is because it depends on what type of hair and hair color you have.
Recommended washing routines for your hairOn average, you wash your hair twice a week. In doing so, you use shampoo and a conditioner. A shampoo is primarily meant to clean your hair and the conditioner nourishes your hair. In addition, you can use a hair mask for an extra boost.
We highlight a few washing routines for your hair.
How often should you wash curly hair? With curly hair, we advise you to wash your hair once a week with a special shampoo for curly hair. Eg. our Keune Confident Curl products. These products activate your curls and provide beautiful frizz-free hair. Tip: leave your conditioner or hair mask in your hair overnight and rinse it out in the morning. Use the hair plopping method where you tie a cotton shirt around your hair. This gives your curls even more definition.
For blond or gray hair you wash your hair on average once a week with a regular conditioning shampoo and once with a silver shampoo. For example, with the Keune Silver Savior products. The advantage of these products is that they are nourishing and keep a nice cool color without the hair color getting too cool. If you want an extra cool color result, then you can use these products every wash.
How often should you wash your hair as a man?For men, the same frequency applies as for women. On average, wash your hair twice a week. It is also advisable for men to use a shampoo and conditioner with each wash. For men, it is only better to use a conditioner that also takes care of the scalp and not just the hair. Keune has special hair products for men.
How can you wash your hair less often?Do you feel that your hair quickly becomes very oily and thus you have to wash it more often? Then we recommend training your scalp to reduce the number of washes. Why train your scalp? Because oily hair is often due to the sebum production of your scalp, which you turn upside down with washing your hair too often. You can reduce the amount of washing your hair in several ways:
1. Use dry shampooUse our dry shampoo a little more often and spray it on the roots of your hair. The formula of the dry shampoo contains zeolite which absorbs greasiness and adds texture to the hair without leaving any white residue. So you can postpone a wash.
2. Put your hair in a bunYou can also put your hair up the last day before you wash your hair. Then it's less visible that your hair is greasy. Tip: take a look at these easy updos for summer.
3. Wash with lukewarm waterWash your hair with lukewarm water. This reduces the stimulation of sebum production and also makes your hair less likely to become oily.
According to the rules, every shampoo must contain surfactants. Explained chemically, these substances are compounds that lower surface tension between two liquids. These substances also make a shampoo lather. There are so-called no-poo shampoos available that contain fewer of these substances. These shampoos are mainly designed for afro hair and are less cleansing than a normal shampoo.
Should you alternate shampoos once in a while?
No, unless your hair's needs change. Basically, you choose your shampoo according to the needs of your hair type. This can only change over time. For example, as you get older, your hair may become thinner and you need a shampoo that gives volume. If you have coloured hair, you need to use a shampoo that keeps your colour longer. If your hair is stiff after a summer holiday with lots of seawater and swimming pool water, you will want a conditioner or hair mask that gives extra nourishment. So always see what your hair needs and adjust your shampoo and conditioner accordingly.
Is conditioner bad for your hair?
Absolutely not! When you wash your hair, shampoo makes your hair cuticles open. This allows the shampoo to do its job and cleanse your hair. To nourish your hair and then close them nicely again, you need a conditioner. So a conditioner only protects your hair more. If you don't use a conditioner or hair mask after washing your hair, you are more likely to get hair breakage and frizz.
Are parabens, silicones or sulphates bad in your shampoo? No, no and no. All three ingredients have been used safely in cosmetics for years. If they were bad for you, the World Health Organisation would not have allowed them. However, these ingredients must be properly incorporated into products.
